Why We’re Doing Social Media Differently at Logcast

Social media users are feeling used up.

Creators are frustrated. Exploited.

Perhaps many social media platforms have forgotten that they are only as valuable as their community. They are everything with their users, and nothing without them.

This may not apply to everyone, but we feel like the world is ready for a different kind of social media platform. One that is not about cultivating an uncomfortable addiction, selling people’s data, censorship, competition for likes and follows.

One where everyone without a blue checkmark is not just a “follower”. But someone with a story to tell.

In our quest for the perfect photo, the smartest, most well-written tweet, we have forgotten the fundamentals of connecting with each other.

In real life social interactions, we engage with each other using language. And this is what makes us truly human.

Logcast is a voice-first social app that lets users record, publish and discover short-form audio updates from friends or creators, join conversations, create a private community, hang out in live-talk rooms, and document their thoughts, creativity and experiences in real time, as they happen.

Everything we design is created to make digital social interactions feel as authentic as possible, mirroring the ebb and flow of conversations we hold with each other in real life.

We are building the next generation of podcasting, a more live and spontaneous content format known as “logging” or “logcasting”, bringing the increasingly popular audio content format of podcasts into everyday social media life.

We’re not in competition with Spotify. We believe we need as many diverse voices as possible. While Spotify is designed to give a voice to the top 2% of creators (artists, influencers and famous podcasters), Logcast exists for the other 98% of people that still have something to say.

Almost 100 million people listen to podcasts weekly in the US alone. But less than 1% of those have ever recorded one. Why?

Our “one tap” technology lets users record and publish short audio clips direct to the app from their phone, without a need for podcast equipment, editing and a time-consuming upload process to Spotify.

Here at Logcast, we also feel a deep responsibility to accelerate the future of monetization for social platforms. One that is not built around extracting maximum profit by selling their user’s privacy and data, no matter the cost to society. Week in week out, new “optimizations” are making the experience worse for creators and users.

Instead, we see ourselves as a community network. One where users pay to unlock extra features, subscribe to private channels, join live-talk rooms, and support their favorite creators.
